Hi,
topped up the power steering fluid about 1000 miles ago on my 1995 a4,there was an unusual noise when I started the car,checked it and found it to be from the power steering unit there was no fluid,what might be the reason,there are no visible leaks,any help appreciated.

Wrong forum ! New A4s here;-) Most likely scenario -
Bad seal allows fluid to collect in boot at one or both ends of the steering rack. Nothing drips. Watch out when checking as that fluid can come shooting out !
If I recall correctly, both your car and my Alfa use a similar ZF rack. You can get rebuilt racks, or new racks. A rebuild should be around $500 + install.
In the future, flush the p/s steering system every 2 or 3 years. Same goes for brakes.
