Default thinking of 3.0 instead of 1.8t

In case you hadn't read my previos post i was hit by a drunk driver resulting of the total loss of my 03 a4 1.8 t. I'
m looking at possible replacements and considering the 3.0 instead of the 1.8t (same vintage) besides asthetically what kind of differences will i notice when but up against the 1.8t? opinions please?

Default Re: thinking of 3.0 instead of 1.8t

I chose the 3.0 over the 1.8T for the following reasons:

1. no turbo lag
2. smoothness of power delivery
3. for 2003, the 1.8T had no 6-speed manual

My previous car was a 2001 A4 1.8T. Not a B6, obviously, but the 1.8T, while I believe to be a great engine and nearly bullet-proof, did not have the "feel" I was looking for.

Of course, the 3.0 is very limited if you're big into modding, as most posters are on this board.

But I'm not. Well, maybe an H-Sport rear sway bar, but that's about it!

Hope this helps.

Good luck to you.

Default Agree with above. More bang for your up front buck with the 3.0

Sure, the 1.8T is more moddable but most of us with 3.0's are pretty happy with the power. Nice, smooth, broadly availabe torque especially at low RPM's compared with the 1.8T, even chipped ones.

3.0's are a little nose-heavier but it's not a huge difference. Aftermarket supsension can mollify this effect.

I drove a couple of chipped 1.8T's before deciding on my 3.0.

Default visually you will only get the chrome windows surrounds....

but feature-wise you can get full leather seating, reverse dipping passenger sideview mirror, and wood trim interior. You get slightly bigger rotors in the front too since you'll be a couple hundred pounds heavier than a comparable 1.8T. I'm sure there are more differences but this all that I can think of right now.

Default Friend of mine has the 3.0...

Very nice car. I think there are a few differences:

1) The 3.0 comes with the seat memory and power passenger seat (I have an '04 1.8T and did not get either of theses - not sure if they were available at the time, but I'm wanting them now!).

2) The 3.0 has very smooth power delivery, and the power doesn't suffer when the A/C is on, like it does in the 1.8.

3) The 3.0 will use more gas. I got the GIAC upgrade for my 1.8, and didn't notice any difference in fuel consumption. This is usually a personal issue, but if you're one who's concerned about the environment or fuel prices, this may come into play.

4) Brakes (see post above).

Default Thoughts on gas mileage: 3.0 vs 1.8T ?

I've been thinking about replacing my seven-year-old A4 2.8QTS with a B6, but was pondering the 1.8T vs. the 3.0. These posts are really helpful, but what about gas mileage? What are you getting on your 3.0s?

Thanks!
