Tires - 2001 A4 1.8t Sport
I need advice on replacement tires for my A4 - this will be my third set of tires (including the originals) after 61,000 miles.
The originals were Dunlop SP Sport 8000's - 20555ZR16's to be exact. The second set was the same. My specific questions:
1. The tire place is recommending H-rated Bridgestone Potenza 009's in the same size, claiming good performance (but not as good as the Dunlop's) and far superior wear - is the tradeoff worth it? How much better might the wear be versus the performance trade-off?
2. If I decide to go the higher performance route, is the Dunlop the "best" option at this price point (approx. $110/tire)? Or would you recommend something else in the high performance category and why?
3. If I go with the higher performance option, could I go with 22555ZR16's instead of the 20550ZR16's - would they fit the stock wheels? Assuming they would still fit, what difference would they make?
Thanks in advance for your guidance!

The correct 225 would be a 225/50-16, to keep the rolling circumfrence the same.

The 225/55-16 would introduce some speedometer error.

what is most important for you? Performance? Tread wear? Price? or Inclemental weather conditions?
Is road noise important to you?
There are a lot of choices. I personally like Goodyear F1 GS D3s. They are offered on tire rack at $126/tire - $50 mail in rebate. The GY is a great max performance summer tire with awesome wet traction. However, these aren't suitable for the snow at all. And as most summer tires, don't as well when the outside temperature is below 40F.

Re: what is most important for you? Performance? Tread wear? Price? or Inclemental weather condition
I'd like to get the most I can out of the performance of the car itself, without going to the extreme of a tire that just flat-out won't work in the few snow storms we have here in Virginia. I suppose that's why Audi went with the Z-rated tires that they did as original equipment.
So I guess that answers my first question (thanks) - now I need to know what the best options are in that class (thanks for the Goodyear advice - I'll check those out) AND whether I can/should go for a slightly wider version on my existing wheels (pros/cons).
To all viewers - please note that I have moved this to the B5 forum as requested.
