Default Turbo Lag

Hey everyone,
Ive been driving my 03 b6 since sept 09, bought it with 77k n put about 3k miles on it. Im really getting anoyed by the major turbo lag in this car and was wondering whether this is common with the 1.8T or perhaps there is something i can do to fix it. One thing which i noticed is that my dad put 93 octane in the petrol tank when i lent it to him (he thinks its was a 'sports car' and needed 'fast car petrol'). After driving it with a tank of 93 octane the turbo lag was overwhelming, and switching it back to 87 octane decreased this, but its still a problem.

I was advised to install a cold-air intake to make up for it, but I wanna get everyone's consensus on this issue before i make any moves.

I really regret having not gotten the 3.0 V6

You should be using at least 91 octane fuel. It will run with lower octane by reducing timing advance. The Audi recommendation is to use at least 91 octane; I would also use VCDS/VAG-COM to reset the ECU to clear past history associated with your lower octane usage.. Also note being a turbo engine you will want to keep RPM above 3000 for best engine response.

I have the 3.0 V6 in my B6 and it is a great engine that pulls well from 1500RPM; it is quite different driving with that engine vs the 1.8T or my 2.0T. Best bang for buck performance mod for the 1.8T would be a chip. Many stories on this forum of the performance.gains achievable.

I dont think a "cold air" intake would do anything to reduce the lag though. Other part is that you should be filling your car with 91+ octane...

The beauty about the 1.8T is that depending on your pocket book, there are progressive mods that will get you more power that are proven becuase they have been around for a while. I have read some guys getting 400+ out the engine on stock internals. There is essentailly only one high dollar mod for the V6 which is a supercharger and that is brand new and buggy.

Having said all that, keep in mind you still have a 4 cylinder engine. The strength of the car is not off the line acceleration, it is "on boost" response and handling (due to quattro and lighter weight). My joy comes from watching people's eyes when after they have left me behind at the stop light, I go cruising past them on clover leafs or tight bends becuase I don't have to lift

I do have a 02 1.8 Sport (upgraded suspension and larger wheels). I have not done any mods to up the power as I am happy with it the way it is...for now. Maybe some other folks on the forum have some experience or just google it.

There are a buncha chips available. You can get O.CT, MTM, APR, GIAC, REVO. In addition to that you should get a diverter valve. If you want more power, you can op for an exhaust system, and add intercooler later.

I find the power of the 1.8t once you get it going to be plenty for normal driving, mine is also a frontrak manual so it has a bit more pep of the line then the heavier quattros. I just regret getting the 3.0 for the sound, 4 cylinders never sound that great especially when compared to a V6.
