Default URGENT help requested- need to see if my dealer has ruined my engine

This may be unwarrented concern, but I think when I had my last oil change, my dealer took out my air filter and didn't put in a new one, so I may have been sucking dirty air for the last 5000 miles. I pulled the air intake duct to get to my right burned out headlight, and I could swear there used to be a filter in here. I pulled the rest of the duct, which I'm pretty sure I've never done before, and I found another filter which was intact but filthy, so hopefully if I'm correct, no terrible damage was done. (Please see the next post for a pic of what I'm thinking may be the secondary filter, I can't figure out how to post multiple pictures in one post.) If I've been driving without an air filter for the last 5000 miles (with a recent snowstorm and salt, no less), what can I do to check for and minimize any damage?

Your air filter is INSIDE the airbox. I can see it in your third pic.

Default Is that the only air filter? I could have sworn there was one in the flexible looking part of the

ductwork, as seen in the first pic. If not, I feel pretty sheepish for getting so excited over nothing...

Default that secondary filter is your pre-filter, used to catch large objects like road salt, pebbles...

and large particles of dirt, etc. Many people here have removed theirs without any trouble. I did the same when I had my B6. If that's all that was missing, then you have nothing to worry about. it's the large filter that really counts.

Default Where's the large filter? Is that the one bananas was talking about? I don't remember seeing a

filter in there, I'll have to pull the duct again and have a look.

There are 2 filters. The large box filter you can barely see in 3rd pic and the prefilter in 2ndpic

Default I Am An Idiot

I don't know what I was misremembering, but I just went and pulled all the ducts again and I found the filter down in the airbox. I can't believe I've had this car for 4 1/2 years and I just now figured out where the air filter is located. I am embarrassed and ashamed. Sorry for wasting everyone's time, and my apologies to the dealer for assuming the worst. Thanks for your help, I'm glad I asked here before I went and made a fool of myself at the dealership!
