Default Vag-Com USB Cable from Ebay
So I was thinking about trying to just buy an VAG-COM USB cable from Ebay and then buy the license for the software through Ross Tech.

All I found were cables from China, which I'm not really into...

Anyone else have other options they've tried?

I bought one a few years ago from Taiwan, and it still works fine today.

Default No, it doesn't work like that. Ross-Tech's license is in their cable
The software on the website is free to download, but if you have the ebay cable you won't be able to access all the functions. That being said, I still have my old ebay cable (it worked fine), but the Ross-Tech is worth its weight in gold.

Considering that the cable is extremely light and the exchange rate for gold is $970/ounce...wait a minute. Sold.

I will probably spring for the real deal and not mess with some hokey crap anyways. Thanks for the advice!

Default Yes, you can buy the FULL software license even with a 3rd party cable.
But only for release ver.409 or 311. Mine works great for my 02.

Default Just buy the Ross-Tech cable
Best money I've spent on my car so far. Invaluable for diagnostics and logging when things are going wrong.
