I should have conveyed that thinner oil might give better mpg & of course better flow in winter
That goes to the principle of using the thinnest oil possible. Thinner does not mean more wear either, in fact very low wear in new 20 weight oils. I swear to God I am going to put my mom's Passat 2.Slow on 5w-20. She makes all short trips and does not hammer it. During the warm-up period is the most wear, like 80%, and the oil is way thickest. So, thin oils with low W ratings like 0w-20 actually work well in some applications, like my Honda. I take all long trips and drive hard, so I can use a 10w-30, not missing the cold flow because most of my trip it's fully warmed up anyway. Plus I only start and warm it up once or twice a day.
If I was a soccer mom and made a bunch of short trips, never geting the oil fully warm and thinned, starting with a thin formula like 0w-20 would be most ideal.
My earlier post ^2 up^ is pretty rambling.
Basicly I was saying that the visc in your engine depends on the temp of your engine oil and the visc of the oil at the reference temp all oil is rated (for the label), +212f. Hypothetical "operating temp".
So if the oil never gets avove +180 or so, the stuff that starts being rated as a "20 weight" never gets hot enough to thin down to a 20, so is more like 30 or 40 while in service driving 2 miles to a soccer practice.
Performane cars have the opposite problem, the heavy 30 or 40 gets too hot and thins way down below it's ability to keep parts seperated etc. fwiw, there are additives that help after the oil film breaks down "ep" additives are for diesel apps.
So, you gotta look at the oil temp guage and go from there. A few spikes to +225f means get a 40 weight HD for diesel, not a 10w-40 or a Euro 5w-40 car oil like Syntec, just Heavy-Duty diesel oils like TDT, Rotella or a 15w-40.
blah blah.

That'll work. The newest dealer oil, Castrol SLX Pro 5w-30.Ask your "Techs" about it as a lil' "test"
dealer techs rely on much older stuff from a drum and...well.
I wish I had the SLX Pro part number handy, but it should be get-able. SLX is the premium oem line in Europe, the family of oils that German Syntec came from. I imagine the SLX Pro might be from Germany too. As well as this new LL-III stuff. I don't know of ay ~other~ VW 504/507 oils in the USA. meh, it's a dealer part, thought you'd like it.
