Default Why do the stock rear brakes look so damn unimpressive?

They're tiny! It looks like they'd fit a bike!
I know I'm being immature here...it's not how they look, but how they function that counts.
So...how effective are they compared to larger, more impressive-looking brakes?

AND...why is it that some cars have larger discs in the rear than in the front? Isn't up to 80% of the braking done at the front?

Oh...and also, what is that black circular shield thing behind the brake?

Thanks CLEAN for the pics.

My guess is that bigger brakes on rear would be for rear engine cars? or RWD?

Default Because they ARE unimpressive.

The shield is a heat/brakedust shield; correct me if I'm wrong.

It's because our cars are nose-heavy. Cars w/ large rear brakes are often mid- or rear-engined.
