X-Type is a pretty sedan but the A4 is a much better choice...
My humble opinion on A4 vs. X-type:
- the X-Type's exterior has a very "refined" design, or should I say feminine? It's good on the eyes but it'll get dated very soon. The A4 has a very sensual but yet understated exteior. I get a thrill everytime I see an A4 passes by at high speed. And I've never seen people driving fast in an X-Type.
- the overall materials used and ergonomic design r better and more thoughtful throughout the cabin in the A4. U might wanna read the review on edmunds.com on the X-Type - the emergency trunk release actually broke off when the editor was trying to use it. So much luck if u r really locked up in X-Type's trunk.
- the Audi is just youthful, classy, and understated. The Jag is <i> trying </i> to scream rich w/ the shiny cat on the hood and all the chromes on the exterior!
- depending on ur location, the Audi could be unique. But the Jag does have a bigger name.
- not saying the Jag's AWD is no good. But quattro is a race-proven technology.
- it felt like the X-Type has less interior room (due to the roof line).
- some dislike the fact that the X-Type uses Ford Taurus engines and Mondeo platform. This could be said to the A4s as well. However Audi & VW engine/platform/technology sharing is the other way around.
Overall, the X-Type is a good entry-level lux. sedan, but the competition in this segment is strong and the Jag falls short when compare to the A4.
