Just went through that with my A4...
I wouldn't "expect" the dealer to come down at all . They will sell cars at sticker if they can, just the nature of the buisness.
Use Edmunds.com/Consumer Reports/Cars.com to come up with a invoice price for the car with your options.
You could also ask the dealer to show you the invoice for the car your looking at but they are not obligated to do so and most get upset. Then when they do it's not the real one.
It helps if you cast a wide net. Say like a 400 mile radius from where you live. Then you can get quotes from the Internet Dept from more dealers.
After several weeks, alot of phone calls and emails I was able to buy mine for $500.00 over listed invoice.
A weak dollar and a new model may mean you won't get as far though.

Good advice
Always try to negotiate from dealers invoice (you can get it from the places Roch listed)
Just know the numbers - and don't get hung up if the dealer cost the dealer shows you are off by ten or twenty from what you have - dealer prices can change. Main thing is that you should have a dealer you can trust - if not walk

Much slimmer than you think...
on $38K A4 the difference from MSRP to invoice is about $2600.
I'd say, find a salesperson you like and pay full price. Audi will get their money, even if the car is discounted. If you find a good dealership and a good salesperson- please pay full price and feel good. I guarantee you will.
My 3 cents.

Re: another question
According to sales manager when I was buying mine at the end of Feb, Audi just decreased the margin from 7% to 5% to cover the euro; though I don't know how true that is. And becuase the B7 is/was fairly new they are really reluctant to deal on it when there are still B6's around, though of course that could of changed. The Edmunds avg price in your area was a pretty good guesstimate - is it updated for the B7? Also if you are financing they have a lot more room to move, even .5% can make a fair difference. The advice about dealers in your region is also good. I had the dealer from Houston on the phone while negotiating a deal at the Austin dealer and got the price down $40 a month really quickly - not necessarily the nicest thing to do though.
Good luck!

Do you have an Audi your going to trade in?
That can help bring the price down, but I would say to sell it own your first if you want the maximum valve for it.
How long do you plan to keep the car? Maybe leasing is an option? But leasing is a little more trickier than buying.
Are you going to finance through the dealer or find your own loan. Typically it's better to try and get approved from your bank or credit union before going through the dealers financing so you have competitive rates and are not reliant on the dealer to get the car.
My CU gave me 4.2% on a 60 month loan for 120% of the purchase price of a new car. Plus 30 days to shop.
F&I guy at the dealer's wanted to set me up but couldn't come near that.

Margin has been cut down to about 5%.
Once everything needs to be paid at the dealership, with a $500 discount that leaves about a $1,000-$1,200 deal for the dealer.
Not much at all.
From what the new CEO of Audi said, don't expect any incentives on the Audi any time soon.
Yes the strong Euro is not helping, but still the B7 is doing quite well.
Most people are doing leases and the rates are still quite attractive considering it is a new model.
You may find some help from Audi before the 2006 come out, however you better not be too picky when you pick out a car with the options that you want, because that car might be really, really hard to get.

Re: another question
from what the dealer told me today and yesterday, the mark up from invoice is only 6%. (which is lower than traditional). I don't know if they were telling the truth or not, but basically this means that you won't be getting much of a discount off the sticker price if the dealer wants to make any profit.
