living in a cold area (< 30 degrees) hear a scraping noise at all coming from the plastic cover facing the grill that hides the timing belt? I have an issue like this that only seems to happen when the car sits overnight on cold days. The dealer says that they can't do anything until they hear the noise. Is there such little clearance behind that cover that cold conditions lead to parts scraping? This type of scraping certainly can't be good in the long run if it's actually the belt.

Default I live in NYC. This has been a relatively warm winter but on the cold days I haven't noticed that at

all.

Default Yeah. It's a very subtle sound that's hard to hear if the surroundings are noisy

and the hood is closed. It's much more audible if you open the hood first and then start the car. It'll come from the right front side around the air intake.

You might have a bad tensioner(bearing). I can't believe that it would be the timing belt rubbing on cover because there's only one right way for it to be installed(especially from facotry) due to its need to be a sealed fit.

Default I am pretty sure that it's something rubbing

against the plastic cover because when I push on it (i.e. push it toward the engine), the scraping sound goes away.

That is strange, especially pushing in. There was someone else on here describing that same thing, but I thought his was more the radiator shroud. I can't believe Audi has something as basic as a clearance problem on the front engine cover. The 2.0T is a new design though.

I would think have dealer check it under warranty.

Good luck.

Default ~ 2 week ago, I noticed my engine cover was missing...

I wonder if this is "known issue" and during my 15k service they left the cover off intentionally to avoid me experiencing the same thing you are experiencing. I called the dealer and they are getting me another cover - will post if I get simular experince when the cover is in place.

I think he's talking about timing belt cover, not the cosmetic engine cover on top.
