Default Nasty Tire Experience

Last night, while driving on a narrow two lane road (with no shoulder), a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction forced me to move all the way over to the side, where I hit a baseball-sized rock. This caused both tires on the passenger side to blow out. The front went immediately, the back took about an hour to give up the ghost. Luckily, I bought road hazard insurance when I bought the car, so I was able to get two new tires, absolutely free.
I highly recommend the road hazard insurance, particularly if you have the 17 inch wheels, which seem to be prone to this sort of thing. I understand that a pothole will also do a number on a 17 inch. The coverage cost me $200 and covers tires and wheel damage. List price on the tires was $400 for two ContiPro Contact, so I'm up $200. Get this coverage if you can!

A couple of questions:
Can someone post a picture of the jack in its holder in the trunk? I'm having a heck of a time getting it back in.

The ContiPro Contact tires do not have any markings indicating that they are directional. However, the tread DOES seem to go one way. The Audi Dealer mounted my two new tires so that the tread is going the opposite way from the two other wheels. The car tracks just fine, but I'm wondering about this...

Finally, the tool kit contains a little black plastic cylinder that threads into the wheel rotor to help you hold on the wheel while you thread in the lug bolts. In cold weather, these things snap. Mine broke off and left a piece in the bolt hole, which I had to remove with a drill. Next time, I'll hold the wheel/tire up with my foot while I thread in the bolts.

Sorry for the long post...

Default Those German engineers

It took me a good 30 minutes trying to figure how to put the thing back in. Someone posted a picture in the thread below:

https://forums.audiworld.com/a4b7/msgs/5597.phtml</a

You can get a aluminum replacement for the wheel holder.

I haven't seen the tread on these tires, but it may be like the yokohama AVS intermediate, it LOOKS like it backwards on one side, but the tires are not directional. They do, however, have an INSIDE and OUTSIDE.
They roll in opposite directions, but its irrelevant as long as the correct side is facing IN.

Anyone have a pic of the continentals?

Default How many miles did you have you tires? This sounds like a bad idea

It's very important that all 4 tires have equal tread left on them on a Quattro! If I were you I would take the two new tires and put them on either the front or the rear so your car if not replace the other two that were not damaged. Having an unbalanced rolling diameter can ruin the quattro system.

Thanks for the EXCELLENT link providing the secret formula to get the jack back in. Worked perfectly and I doubt I could have done it without those pics. I'm going to print the page and put it in the manual for next time.

I put the new ones on the rear. The tires only had 1070 miles on them, so I don't think it will be a problem.
