Friend of mine is looking at '06's and inquired if dvd capability will be possible with the audi nav.

I did some searching and confused myself more, but apparently a few months back their were some workarounds using an external dvd player of some sort...

I'm just wondering what the latest developments are in this regard (if any), and where I can dig up more info for him. Thanks guys.

2)The dietz 1417 adaptor which basically allows you to connect the external dvd player to the navingation unit.

The Dietz controller is usually available on ebay.de but very expensive and hard to get over here in the States.

is it a tough thing to DIY? or can a good installer handle the job easy? Ballpark price on the dietz?

your biggest problem is getting your hands on the Dietz. I want one but really can't justify spending >$300 just to get it. That seems to be the price when bought from Germany. I'm hoping it will become available in the States over the next few months considering there is somewhat of a demand for it now.
