Silly question, when is the best time to check oil level? Cold, warm or hot engine?

It really has to do with all the oil draining back to the pan so you can measure
accurately - rather than the oil that will be in the journals and top half of the engine

ok,
i know things expand in heat does that apply here?
does the change in viscosity thanks to heat affect anything here either?
if you get the chance could you explain the oil numbers?
TIA

Volume of oil not effected enough by the temp changes
The viscosity also is not effecting the volume of the oil. Viscosity is really the shear capability of the oil molecules vs temperature or in other words - how the oil flows.
BTW - changing the oil it is better to have the oil hot - as that way the oil flows better and the detergents have all the dirt in suspension.
