Default Any major changes between '09 and '10 for the B8 A4?

Hi all,

With my stupid decision in 2008 to go with a BMW 5, I've not been keeping up as much as I should on current events at Audi.

(I do plan to be back in a B8 S4 next year though!)

Anyway, my Mom is looking at the B8 A4 to replace her G35.

One of the dealers has a 2009 3.2 (rare find, especially in 2010!), and he's willing to deal on it to the tune of a $10K discount.

AFAIK, there wasn't much change between 2009 and 2010 (except the fact the 3.2 can no longer be ordered in the A4!).

She buys a car and keeps it for 5-6 years, so I don't feel like having a 2009 vs 2010 will impact resale value too much in 2015-2016 when she goes to trade it in.

Do you think I should have her pursue the 2009 A4 3.2 at a mega discount (and it's totally loaded...$51k was the sticker, I didn't even know the A4 could get that high), or should she go for a 2010?

I have my thoughts, but I'm curious to hear from the peanut gallery.

TIA.

I don't think there are any significant differences between the '09 and the '10.

$10k is a very significant discount! For that amount of money, all other things being equal, I would say the '09 is a good buy.

I will say this for the 2.0TFSI though: it is an excellent, excellent, excellent engine. Well engineered and designed all the way around, with performance equaling or exceeding most 6 cylinders, including BMW's 328i. It delivers so much torque, starting so low in the rev range and continuing for so long, that it "feels" very much like a 6-cylinder engine to me more than a 4, but I still get significantly better gas mileage out of it than I do would with a 6. I can definitely see why Audi had such a hard time selling the 3.2's after the 2.0T engine came out.

The only things that come to mind are: 3G MMI, LED tails, and different content of option packages. (for the 2010)
As good as the 2.0 is, the 3.2 is silky, with a much more appropriate exhaust note.
(my humble opinion, of course)

Agreed on the 2.0T engine. A friend and I just did Ingolstadt delivery with his new A5 (which he got the 2.0T because he wanted a manual transmission), and the engine is very, very impressive for what it is, even on the autobahn.

You can tell it's a 4-cylinder when you want to go from 80 to 100, but for general everyday driving around town, there is plenty of power.

That said, my Mom is 55, so unless she has undisclosed tendencies of drag racing around town with groceries in her trunk and her old lady friends in the back seat, the 2.0T or 3.2 (or even the old 1.8T!) would be just fine.

Consideration of the 3.2 is simply because of the deal it is.

An example of this is memory seats were moved OUT of the Premium+ package for 2010 (only included in Prestige). So in that way, 2009 Premium+ is a better deal than 2010 Premium+.

well a new 2.0t you can probably get for $3000+ off sticker.

since you don't really care about resale much, i'd take the 2009.

you get twin tailpipes! a prestige 2010 2.0t is going to cost about the same as the $42k if you got sport pack + prestige. I'm assuming the 2009 you are looking at is $41k and even has ADS and stuff. I am not sure if thats worth anything to you, but given you get the "better" engine, and don't care about resale its a good deal and the v6 does sound better.

the 2.0t and v6 I think for most people at least if you dont think about the sound is about the same though. but maybe your mom would like a "6 cylinder". I know my mom would, I tried to explain to her how I spent $40k on a "just a 4 cylinder" and she just couldn't understand how 4 cylinders could be good because she couldnt understand a turbo.

I just looked...and this car has Black Phantom (gotta pay extra for those metal shavings!), Prestige, ADS, Navi + camera, Adaptive Cruise, Dark Walnut wood trim.

MSRP is $52,550.

My feeling is that discount is really putting the car at current retail. In order for this to be a "deal" I would ask for a price reduction to about $37,000.

When a car is more than a year old, depreciation is built into the car even if it is still untitled. Why should you pay for the depreciation for the period you did not own the car? That is on the dealers books. If he can dazzle you with what appears to be a big discount from sticker, he gets you to make up for his failure to sell the car during the model year.

The parts added to the car to make it a prestiege version have shown themselves to be almost pure profit for VW. They don't add very much to the value of the car. Looking at 2009 A4's there seems to be about 1K difference between the base "premium" model, and a loaded "Prestiege" car. Cars are showing up at auction for 25K to 29K with 30,000 miles. These are 2.0T cars with the 3.2l not showing. If you allow twenty cents per mile and a small additional amount for the 3.2l, the $37,000 price is reasonable compared to the market.

Good luck, I hope your mom enjoys the car.

Hey Moviela, this is sage advice. Since I'll likely be doing the negotiating for her, I will keep this salient! Thank you!

I'm a big fan of the 3.2 engine over the 2.0T, but the 3G MMI in the 2010 is a significant upgrade over the 2G in the 2009. If the engine isn't that important to your mother, the MMI improvements may be.

Just another data point to consider.
