Default Audi A4 2010 Engine Replacement

Hi all,

I have searched the forum and found similar situations to mine but still have some unanswered questions.

I was driving and the power steering and brakes failed lost power and then the engine stalled. The engine would not start and ended up burning out the starter. I then had it towed to a mechanic. He removed the starter after it burned out saying it would not crank at all (only a quarter) and the engine is toast. He has quoted me a replacement at $4800 CAD and $2k in labour. However, he said it is not worth the time or money to take it apart and figure out what went wrong - he said it will cost more to figure out what happened and fix it then to just replace it. Do you agree? I figure he would take it apart, figure out the issue and then quote me a replacement / fix.

Car also had oil consumption issue, in case that matters.

Thoughts?

Before we can assume anything can you tell us if warning came on the dash or did the MIL light come on before the engine stopped. Did it overheat or did you run out of oil . Is the engine now seized or can it be turned by hand. Based on the little info you provided your service guy may be right.

$7k for a replacement CAEB? What's his guarantee that the replacement motor won't require thousands more in repair down the road? The turbo wastegate issue, the manifold issue, the injectors issue, the piston rings oil consumption issue, the camshaft chain tensioner issue, etc.
If he was quoting cost to replace it with a B8.5 motor, that kind of money sounds more interesting. But $7k to play Russian roulette all over again?

And you might want to find out if it was a loose chain tensioner. There's a lawsuit where Audi, at least here in the US, is paying that kind of money for those with tensioner failure.

Wow I just got a 2012 with 54k miles for $5500. It had light body damage so I had to spend $800 to get that fixed, but now it's ready to go and only cost me $6300.
