Default MMI does not play music on USB

I have an MMI “AUDI Multimedia” Software Version: HNav_JP_P0263.
When I bought the car I was informed that the CD / DVD Player does not work. I bought an AMI Cable from EBay which has a good rating that is AMI to USB & AUX. When I connect it to a phone with AUX I don't hear anything when I play music and when I put mp3 on the USB it does not work, the MMI doesn't read the mp3. I tried with multiple usb 8, 16, and 32 GB USBs and formatted them to fat32 and nothing happened. When I go to the Green menu it tells me that it is reading the usb but it does not play the mp3 that is in the usb. When I put the SD-Card in, it does not play. I tried with 2 SD-Cards and did not play. In the "source section" It say "no device connected". In the Green menu, the "AMI/AUX" part I have tried with the 8 options and nothing that works. I don't know what else I could do so I can use the usb or aux or sd-card.

@Wolly : Early MMI production/factory software limited the size of FAT/FAT32 SD cards. I haven't seen any updates for your HNav_JP system, though. Still, you should be able to read MP3 files on a 2GB SD card (formatted as FAT32) (if you can still find full-size 2GB SD cards) in either SD slot. Regarding the USB device, the Green Engineering Menu shows the Kingston USB flash drive is recognized, so that's good. But after-market (that is, non-OE) AMI cables can cause the "No device connected" in the Media Source selection menu. Better if you can find a (used/pre-owned) AMI/USB cable, VAG part numbers 4F0-051-510-Q or 4F0-051-510-AB. --g

i use a 32 GB SD card in my head unit and it works fine. the question i would ask is does this have a hard drive ? if so can you load files from the SD card on to the hard drive ? if so it is reading fine and something else is going on.

HNav, so this is the MMI 3G High "mmi navigation plus with hard drive" unit. Whether or not the Japan spec unit implements the Jukebox function of the hard drive, no idea.

What are the specifications of the MP3 file you are attempting to play? The compressed bitrate cannot exceed 320 kbps. Test with 44.1kHz 16-bit stereo material. I don't know if it'll process 20-bit or 48kHz material. Pretty sure it won't handle 24-bit or multichannel material.

Apparently if you put the USB on a Mac, it adds files that can confuse the unit too. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...24745-9999.pdf

@Airbag has a much newer MMI3GP system running the latest software, so his experience will be different from the OP's.
Looking at your 4th picture, above, again -- is that a combined USB/AUX AMI after-market cable ? Likely the reason why the flash drive isn't recognized as a Media source.
The Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) card reader is interesting for this generation of MMI3G system -- I haven't seen that indicated on an MMI3G display before. --g

The B8 Japan spec had the toll card reader.

Just out of curiosity, did you create a playlist and include it on the USB drive? I'm not sure the system can play files on a thumb drive unless you tell it what to play.

Playlist is not necessary when I use a USB stick via AMI. Just mp3 files in directories. Note, WAV files cannot be played by the system.

If he can't get the SD card slots reading, there's little need to bother with trying to get a USB stick reading over the AMI port. There's some more fundamental media acknowledgement issue with his system.
