Quattro,

I think you convinced me! Great picture... now if only to decide between Ibis white, glacier white, or Moonlight blue!

I went with Ibis because, as the kid mobile/track taxi, I wanted the inevitable nicks, scratches, possible rubs, etc. to be easy to match when/if fresh paint was needed. Metallics and Pearls are tough to match 100%. With metallics, the flake angle will be never be a perfect match on a respray. With pearlescent paints, forget about matching a panel... get ready to respray the whole car. If you aren't very critical, maybe you can live with it. I couldn't.

I am the guy who goes to car shows and concours' and gets excited by truly exceptional paint jobs. Painters are on every corner in a large city but true craftsmen are a rarity.

If I wasn't concerned about the inconsiderate actions of others that share the road and sometimes the same parking space (I swear I'll never understand how they managed to park that close and still get out of their car.), I'd choose the Glacier White Metallic. It's a beautiful color on Porsches anyways.

I thought the first six gears on the 8-speed tip had the same ratios as those on re 6-speed tip. If so, I struggle to see how those who like the 6tip don't like the 8tip. 7 and 8 are for fuel efficiency at speed only, AFAIK.

So what's the difference in performance running through the first six gears?

I found it irritating because when you're driving the 8 speed in auto and you start hitting the paddles to get it over to man-u-matic, now you're up to three taps away from the gear you want instead of one. It's a smooth tranny, but a little onerous to play with.

Iv'e always felt that white avants have a tangible Corellian Freighter feel to them. It's as if they could do the Kessel run in a few less parsecs than lesser smuggler's vehicles...

Han Solo: She'll make point five past lightspeed. She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid. I've made a lot of special modifications myself.

"It's the Avant that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. I've outrun Imperial starships. Not the local bulk cruisers mind you, I'm talking about the big Corellian ships now. She's fast enough for you old man."

What did you say? No photos and it never happened?

Laguna Seca (Corksrew)

Being chased....holding off an M5 and V8 R8....until halfway down the straight anyways

"Watch the wisecracks, kid, or you're gonna find yourself floating home! I'm nobody's straight-man, not on my own ship... We'll be safe enough once we make the jump to hyperspace. Besides, I know a few maneuvers. We'll lose em'!..."

Got a list of ratios including rear diff? I couldn't find the 6spd Tiptronic ratios offhand.

under full throttle, 1st and 2nd felt shorter to me. I'd agree with Sundowner. Once you hit a nice canyon or windy mountain road, the 8spd Tip has you spending a lot of time flipping through gears. With each change taking at least 200ms, it adds up to lost time. With the 7spd Sporttronic in the S4 and its 20ms shifts, this is much less of an issue. With the 6spd Tip, less ratios means less time changing to the appropriate gear.

That being said, I have never driven the 6spd or 8spd in drive for more than a few minutes. I prefer sport when I am just cruising and manual as soon as I want to get more aggressive. If I am cruising on the freeway and the tranny hasn't hit 6th, I paddle it and the tranny will then go back to sport but hold 6th until it is under load (whether acceleration or grade)

For what I know before placing an order for the 2011 A4 Avant model I was also looking for the 2010 , and I remember that AUDI said that the first 6 speeds ratios on the Tiptronic were the same , the 2 extra were made to save engine and gas

Anyway there is not need to use the last 2 gears , just go on manual mode , take control and enjoy

2011 Multitronic Tiptronic Manual

Gear Ratios: 1st 2.492 4.171 3.778

2nd 1.574 2.34 2.050

3rd 1.147 1.521 1.321

4th 0.892 1.143 0.970

5th 0.715 0.867 0.811

6th 0.579 0.691 0.692

7th 0.465

8th 0.37

Final drive 5.970 3.517 3.693

Reverse 3.015 3.403 3.333

2010

Tiptronic®

1st 4.171

3rd 1.521

4th 1.143

2011Red A4Avant,

Thanks for posting that. Maybe 1st and 2nd felt shorter because it then would jump to 4th and sometimes even skip 4th and go to 5th...and that was in Sport mode. Interesting thing, perception.

From a track use perspective, where 6th is already useless, I would now have the dead weight of 3 gears instead of one... I'll pass
