Default Tiptronic question

This is for you guys with the sport or S-line packages. To use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel, does the transmission have to be in manual mode? Also, say you downshift to pass someone -- will the transmission stay in that gear until you upshift? Or will it automatically upshift on its own? Thanks.

Don't believe you have to be in manual mode to use the paddle shifters. And pretty sure it'll upshift on its own after you reach certain RPM as the tiptronic won't let you go past redline even in manual mode.

The paddles can be used in sport, normal and manual mode. There is a small indicator in the dash that shows which mode and gear you are in.
It goes back to automatic if you make a paddle change and you are not in manual mode.

For those of you who have tried the DSG, how fast is the B8 Tiptronic manual upshift/downshift compared to the DSG? Do you miss the DSG at all when you are stuck with the Tip?

Yes. It'll go back to D or S if you don't continue shifting with paddle. Kind of smart to me...

Default smarter than i thought

Just tried. It automatically goes back to D or S when slowed down to stop (Mx->M3->D2(S2)->D1(S1) or 10-25 seconds after the last paddle shifting, depending on speed/rev. Bottom line is, it will for sure automatically go back to D or S. Very good, IMO.

I drove an A3 DSG in Europe when it was just launched. The DSG is faster. But its so long ago i cant tell you in details how much faster.
