Default UK: White (or maybe Grey) Smoke on Audi A4 2.0 diesel Automatic

OK - started a week or so ago.

White/grey smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes as soon as it was start up, then increasing when driven (but can’t see it?) - then lots coming out when at lights (and when put into neutral.)

First - called a mechanic and he serviced it, also added injector cleaner in oil and injector cleaner in fuel. Reduced slightly but still noticeable.

Next - took EGR valve off and cleaned it (was FULL of crap) and also checked MAF (seemed OK.) This reduced the smoking A LOT when starting the car, although still continues to smoke a bit and especially after driving and then stopping at lights, parking.

To add to it – took it out on motorway and floored it up to about 60 mph, an then the car’s power cut significantly? Pulled over and turned engine on and off and power was back .

So then got an OBD computer off eBay to check for any codes- but nothing?

All out of ideas. Any help guys?

Update.

Decided to have a quick check of engine. Started car up and in neutral and no smoke as normal, put it in drive with hand brake on and still no smoke.

Then I heard a pop noise somewhere close to the EGR valve? The white/grey smoke started again - should it be making that pop sound? So although we cleaned it, wonder if it's faulty. Would that explain the issues? Thanks.

Update (want to document my progress and fixes to help others)

Had a full computer diagnostics and two things came up.

First the car seems to have been remapped in some way (Glow Status: 1111111 and Coolant Temp Radiator Output: -) Not sure what that means.

Mechanic thoughts - the grey smoke was coming from the DPF (as the EGR was so blocked up it may have caused the DPF to block.) We took the car on a drive and tried twice to do the DPF forced reset using the computer and both times it came back error! His understanding is that it may be 35% + full - which means it will not clean itself (600c burn to exit the build up?) and needs to be manually cleaned or replaced.

Second - some small spots of oil on the drive (only just noticed.) So it may in fact be a small leak of oil getting into the inlet system of the turbo, which could be the cause of the smoke....

Any thoughts guys? Appreciated.
