It had gotten down to around freezing and my car sat outside untouched for a couple of days, but heated right up when I returned. I even made a thread here because I was so impressed after having cars that you had to remote start 20 minutes in advance to get warmed up.

Even after coming back to it when leaving work and it sits in cold, it heats up very quickly. I have a 6 minute commute from my house in to work and it's warm at the half way point on my way home. The heated seats and wheel are almost instant it feels like, and the vents are blowing warm air after the third minute or so.

Definitely sounds like something is wrong with your car if it's taking 45 minutes to warm up.

Our Q7 heats up that same way you describe that your A4 does, that's why when I started experiencing this it didn't make sense.

And sorry if I wasn't clear, but it actually warms up in approx 10 mins as long as I have the temp setting on "High". Even after the interior warms if I adjust the setting to anything besides "high" it blows cool air...

Interestingly, I only experience this on the first engine start of the day after the car has sat all night. Even yesterday after having the issue on my drive to work in the morning, got in the car 9 hours later to go home and the interior warmed up normally within 10 mins, and I was able to keep the temp setting in the 70's and received heat.

My B9 also heats up the cabin very quickly in the coldest weather. I set mine to Auto and 74 degrees and pretty much forget about it. My coolant temperature gauge gets to normal quickly too.
I also was thinking about a faulty thermostat, yeah I usually set the Q7 on 71 and forget about it so that's why it's been frustrating.. I guess we'll see what Audi says when I bring it in, I'm just hoping I don't get the typical "it's operating as designed" line....

Has your coolant level dropped recently?
I had my coolant level drop and then began having coolant pump problems stemming from a leaking thermostat housing and water pump, (both of those are located on the block just below the throttle body which is below spark plug 3.) This leaking coolant was draining down the wiring and was interrupting the run signal to the circulation pumps. One of the pumps circulating coolant to the heater core in the cabin and the other moves coolant through the transmission cooler.

Wow, thanks I'm going to show this to my service guy when I bring it in..

Thanks for all of the responses and ideas everyone.. It's under warranty so I am bringing it in on Sat and plan to leave it for several days..Let's see what they say...

This is what most people unfortunately dont understand. The car heats up quicker in the first 3 minutes of driving than it would in 15 minutes of idling. Death to mother earth!

This morning I paid closer attention to how my car warms up. When I started out this AM is was 36 degrees (F) here, and after I pulled out of the garage into the driveway, I let the car idle for about a minute while I fiddled with my phone before I started driving.

I started driving the side streets at about 25 mph for about a minute and then out of a major road where I drove for less than a minute at 35 mph before I had to stop at a light. While I was waiting at the light, my Audi dash clock showed four minutes time elapsed since I initially hit the start button. At four minutes the car had reached its normal coolant temperature reading (for my car its four bars) and the fan blower (set at Auto/74 degrees) was blowing warm air into the cabin at high speed.

I had a similar experience yesterday afternoon / evening on my way home from work. Started the car, reset my short term trip computer, put my phone in the mount and drove away in approx 2 mins. On parkway timer showed 8 mins elapsed and vents were blowing warm air at 75 degrees... This morning back to the same 45 mins of temp setting on "High" to get heat..

I have a '17 A4 and an '18 Q5 and about a 2 mile drive to a train station every morning. The drive takes about 6 minutes, and unless it's below 10 degrees (F) both cars are blowing decent hot air by the time I get there. I'm happy with that.

I'm not a morning person, maybe your car isn't either

Idling is bad for the car and mother earth, It is old school, pre-electronic ignitons and controls to think one has to sit for 10 minutes to warm the car up in most geographic areas. The move to EZ PASS-type toll collection was initiated partially to eliminate lines of idling cars at toll booths; idling is when the most pollutants are pumped into the clear morning air.

The problem is, what do you do if the windows are covered in serious ice? The only way to loosen the ice is to heat up the windows, which requires idling...

Of course, in such situations you do what you need to - winter sucks unless you're a skier.
