Underwhelming gas mileage

I've noticed the computer read out for short term trips (which by the way is very accurate at least in our A4) is for the first few miles after start-up on the low side. Its not computer error, it is the warm-up cycle of the car, air/fuel mixture that is set by the FI when car cold, etc. It takes 5-6 miles until I start to see an average of 25 or a bit more for the first trip of the day. And this is with the 7 speed which I'm guessing is more efficient than the 6MT. I think the OP's gas mileage is not abnormally low given the type of driving he is doing. Just my 2 cents.

My commute is 42 miles each way.. I leave early in the morning around 5am and get (based on the trip computer) 31 to 34mpg, since traffic is flowing at a decent rate my avg speed is usually 55-58mph and it takes me roughly 45-50 mins.
However, if I happen to leave work 30 mins later than I usually do, that same trip home could take me between 1-1/2 to 2 hours. And in that type of traffic I usually get 24 to 27mpgs while my avg speed is approx 26mph.....
There was one commute home the week before Christmas that my average speed for over 2 hours was 14mph.. Not fun! I have no idea what my avg MPG's were then since I was too busy pulling my hair out of my head to care.. LOL

Yes, you will also get worse milage with heated seats and heating steering wheel on than A/C on in the summer. Around 25 MPG combined driving is spot on.

My daily commute is about 60 miles total with 40 miles being on an interstate/toll road where I average around 78 mph. The rest of the commute is surface roads with 45 mph speed limit and lots of red lights. Overall my car is averaging about 28.5 mpg.

I don't think anyone can definitively say what mileage anyone else should be getting unless riding along with him or her. Too many factors come into play -- weather, hills, traffic flow/red lights, etc. If I read Onewolf's post correctly sounded like his overall (lifetime?) mileage is 28.5.
I think most of us agree that the car under decent conditions (meaning driven sanely and responsibly -- no hooning and no autobahn runs) is quite efficient given its capabilities. My wife who isn't the smoothest driver and has what I deem to be a heavy foot is getting decent mileage. I cannot complain.
