I had a similar noise it emanated from the top of the windscreen. A nut and washer had come undone on one of the female locks for the roof, making a noise with sideways movement. Refitted them, and tightened all, and the noise was gone.

I'm sure that's probably it. How did you access top of windscreen area to locate/fix the problem? On my car the noise goes away with the top down. Was yours the same?

I got in at the top of the windscreen above the sun visors. On mine I have two female positions for the top to lock to. I removed one and rectified the problem ensuring both female mounts were secured properly to the windscreen surround.
