Default VCDS for Rookies

Guys, I have been watching the threads about all the VAG-COM updates, and didn't feel like I wanted to monkey around with it. However, I had my 5000 mile service visit yesterday at the dealer on my 2012 A6. I asked if they would "adjust" a few settings for me and they said absolutely no.

Now I'm pissed, and I have decided to jump into the VAG-COM updates. Can you please direct me on how to get started?

I went to the Ross-Tech site and it doesn't recognize the VIN of my car. Thus, I'm not sure which VCDS kit to purchase. What do I need to buy so that I can use my PC laptop and adjust the settings of my car? Is there a site that details the steps to making the connection and walks you through the changes?

One of our HEX+CAN interfaces is needed to work with your vehicle. I recommend the HEX-USB+CAN:

The HEX+CAN cable has the software activation built into it. I also recommend using our latest beta 11.8. It will have better support for your vehicle.
