Default Start here...

Many have posted numerous times on this subject. MCH has put out a lot of info. Might want to start with this, then use his UID and search for TC, K04, Tip, etc. You will find plenty of info.

Good luck,

R

Default Have you done anything to the car yet? (Chip?)

I had a tranny fail in my 2000 tip 2.7T, and it was not long after installing at GIAC chip. But, I cannot necessarily blame the chip. Auto trannies are like light bulbs. They work until they don't and it can be 50,000 miles or 200,000 miles. But when it fails, it's not going to be a cheap fix; and in most cases you'll be looking at several thousand dollars.

Some basic truths:

1. Before going to an upgrade, search this site for reviews on Level 10. Not all good, to put it mildly.

2. If you're not chipped now, a tip may not work well with the extra torque solely due to software issues. Most folks with extra HP experience some odd shifting. A tip chip helps some, but not much.

3. Check with the old S4 guys. Lots more chipped tip cars there.

Bottom line, nobody except a ZF tranny engineer can tell you how extra HP/torque will affect your tranny life and performance. Anecdotally, most people have no issues. Bottom line - be prepared to invest in a tranny, and hope you won't have to.

If you haven't chipped yet, do that first. YOu can get well over 300HP and worst case is you kill a turbo, so then you change to K04s.

try level 10 torque converter and valve body.. its supposed to be able to withhold 400-600hp.... the problem with are tranny is the torque converter it can not withstand that much power... i plan on doing this myself in the near future...

Default As I said above, use that vendor with open eyes.

Whenever a vendor takes a complex part, modifies it, then ships it back to another shop to have it installed, the possibility of problems is significant, and then you have two shops pointing fingers at each other. It happens.

When ZF builds a transmission, they build thousands of them, and they do an extraordinary amount of testing and modeling. When a mod shop designs an "upgrade" it's very much a shot in the dark. They assume it's an upgrade, but they are not going to be able to do the testing; and they certainly cannot factor in how the modification impacts other parts.

Check the S4 forum.

Default I ran k04's on my stock Tip

I did not have any problems, but I also did not chip or fuel kit the car. The only objective that I had was reliability, so i did not follow thru with any stage 2 or 3 mods. To be honest the car felt stronger with k03's the way i had it set up. But hey, it's a commuter.
