1999 A6 2.8 Avant Wagon Problems?
I'm considering purchasing a 1999 A6 Avant Wagon with 60,000 miles and was wondering if there are any potential problems to look for in this car. The only thing I've heard is that the 2.8 engine drinks oil.

Leaks oil but no oil consumption. There is temporary fix for the leaks for few thousand miles
Cam adjuster seals and valve covers.
Other than that nothing more that usual-control arms, tie rods, brakes...

Re: 1999 A6 2.8 Avant Wagon Problems?
We have a 2000 Avant, and love it. I bought it last year w/57,000 miles on it, and now we've got 81,000 miles. No major problems. Replaced the timing belt @ 60,000, rear brakes @ 80,000. Cat. replaced under warranty @ 65,000, new center cluster (under warranty) @ 80,000.
Love the car, but don't know if I'd buy one w/out a warranty. We paid $20K, so if you can get the 99 with the miles you're talking about for 10-12K, you've got a deal.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, this Avant does not have any warranty. How much should I budget for maintenance per year? It is currently being serviced by an Audi dealership.

nothing too far out of the ordinary after almost 12 months on ours
Bought a 99 with 70K last December. It's now got ~82K. I've maintained the car myself.
Issues so far:
-Seat memory never worked, recently replaced the switch and it works fine.
-Cruise control stopped working in May, replaced the control unit and it works again.
-Intermittent CEL with the "leak detection pump". Replaced the pump & all is well.
Maintenance so far:
-replaced timing belt, related tensioners, serp. belt, related tensioners, waterpump, thermostat, & cam seals. All that was "routine maintenance" with a timing belt job.
Cost of all parts to date ~$900.
My impression with a heavy Japanese manufacturer bias:
Even though the Audi maintenance is costly (and regular), it's "a lot of car" for the money compared almost anything in the same generic class - all wheel drive, 4 adult passengers + cargo.

No warranty no worries :)
driving mine for 25K miles after I got it 2.5 years ago with 50K miles on the clock-MY 2000
set of brakes, set of tires, syntetic oil, just did the timing belt and everything( including the leaking cam seals& valve covers- $1000)Paid for the timing belt only-everything else I do myslef.
besides that...tie rods...thats it...happy camper with no warranty...and I'm loving it!
