Default 2 Windows Stuck!

My 2000 A6 2.8 had something very strange happen today. The driver side window was completely down and would not go up. I hear a noise in the door when I hit the switch, so something is happening. I figure regulator. Then I tried the passenger side window, down about 3 inches fine, now it is stuck there also! Same noise in door. Rear windows are fine. What are the chances of two regulators going on the same day? Manual says there is no fuse for the windows, a self resetting breaker. So I have an appointment Monday at a local Audi shop, but I would much rather figure this out without many $$$ spent.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Default search 'window guides' and you'll find lotsa info, including really simple DIY

instructions for taking the door panels off. Window guides cost like $4 each (1 per window), and are common failure items on the front doors.

After reading this I went out and tried the push it up method (on the passenger door which is only down 3 inches), but, the lights dimmed and nothing happened when I was using the switch. Then I just pushed up on it with no assist from the switch and got it all the way up! Can't do this with the drivers side because it is all the way down. I will try some silicon spray tomorrow.

I am Not good with behind the door panel things, my hands are too big or something. Always a FUBAR, what is a reasonable price to have these guides replaced?

Thanks

Default Re: 2 Windows Stuck! - Follow up (a bit long)

After looking at the DIY guide, I decided to give this a go, at least to get the windows UP (carport, and cats in the neighborhood). Finding the right place to push up the locking piece for the drivers switch panel took the longest, but after doing it once, it should be easy. While inside, I eased the window up and checked out the window guides. Blue, of course.

The passenger window went up with a little help without removing the panel.

While on the Bentley site forums (where I found the best description of how to get that switch panel off for the drivers window), I caught a mention of a recall to fix these. So I checked out my file on the Audi and sure enough, in 2003 I had the bumper staple LQ recall done, and in the description of this on the invoice it said "Check Window Regulator Update - No Repair Required". So I called AoA today, eventually got a reference #, called the dealer and set an appt to have both doors/windows checked ($62.50 total - reimbursable if these are a recall item).

While talking to the dealer service advisor today, he said that the "No Repair Required" meant they pulled the door panels and checked the window guides (!!!) for the updated part, and the notation meant that the ones that I had were good. When I said that my internet research (here) revealed that the updated part was not blue, and that mine were blue, he got a bit flustered, not objectionable, just a bit surprised that I might know this. Bottom line is that they need to take a look see, but I may get it fixed free, and I will try to make sure they do all four doors if it is covered under this recall. If not then I will attempt the job myself.

My local Audi mechanic (non-dealer) did not ever want to talk about window guides this morning. He insisted that it must be the regulators. When I said "but two in the same day?", he said sure, not uncommon at all. Has me wondering about this shop now.

Edit: Saw the dealer today, the analysis showed that the window guides were at fault, the regulators were fine (how could they tell if the windows don't move?). BUT the recall in 2003 was for the green color window guides and my blue ones were correct at the time of the recall. The orange and pink guides were later refinements and not covered by this recall. So sorry. LoL, they were nice and all, but it would have been very lucky to get this done for free. On to the DIY.

Default Alternate solution. Not window guides.
