Default 2003 A6 C5 2.8L

Bought this car at auction, had codes ran on it.

2 Transmission codes -
17090 --- Transmission range sensor (f-125) implausible signal P0706
18149 --- Clutch Pressure Adaptation AT limit P1731 - intermittent

1 Brake electronic -
00283 --- ABS wheel speed sensor, front left - G47 open circuit/short with power

Last code -
P0171 - System too lean bank 1

I figured out the ABS problem, I replaced the Sensor 2 times with different ones and light is still on. Got codes read one more time and it finally came back for the module i'm currently working on removing it and I have a new one on deck waiting to be installed.

I pulled the spark pack out and saw oil in the reservoir so i'm going to replace the valve cover gasket.

I've driven this vehicle for about a month before I stopped to test it out and on the last drive my coolant was low and oil was in the reservoir and smoke was coming out of the exhaust.
I dug around on the forums and deduced the reason oil is in the coolant is because of the oil cooler, but it doesn't explain the smoke coming out of the back. The quick answer would be a headgasket; however the smoke smells like oil and fuel. not sweet.

I'm wondering if while i'm replacing the valve cover, if I should take the time to remove the intake manifold and look at the MAF and or turbo if i can get ahold of it.

Is this a 2.7T twin turbo or 2.8L engine? 2.8 does not have a turbo and by 2003 the A6 didn’t come with a 2.8 anymore, at least in North America.

The ABS module can often be saved by cutting open and resoldering the broken hair wire(s) coming from the chip to the wire connector block then reseal the cover. There are ABS Controller repair shops that can very likely fix it for a wheel sensor code. If you do replace the ABS Module then grab the software coding from the original to ensure the replacement matches and can recode with VCDS if needed.

Recommend to replace the cam adjuster gaskets along with the valve cover gaskets as they both age and leak around the same time.

Check PCV first if engine is burning oil.

This is a 2.8L I got in Germany,

I haven't fully removed the ABS module yet, I'm having trouble with getting the longer connector off.
Will I have breaks after doing the swap or do I need to get the refurbished module coded with the old module.

Thank you for this, i've been scratching my head about the smoky exhaust.

one more quick question.
I'm not entirely positive, but i'm almost certain that the vehicle is also running in limp mode, due to the tachometer staying below 1500 until I reach about 50 mph, then it drives normally.
Would the PCV possibly cause this since the fuel:air ratio is off?
