4.2 Overheating

Got the "overheat" warning in heavy DC traffic, 98 degrees outside. Believe me, you can't miss the warning - the full display lights up with the red thermometer and graphics. I was able to pull over immediately and shut the engine down, so hopefully no harm done. One interesting feature, the computer shuts the A/C down as you approach an overheat condition. There is no problem with cooling at speed (engine temp. gauge at midpoint, oil at 200 degrees), just at idle and stop and go in traffic. I think it may be the engine fan clutch or the supplemental electric fan or control module for one or both. I should find out soon from the dealer.

Any of you 2.7/4.2 owners experience a similar problem?

Could also be thermostat stuck.

I ran my car hard at the track in the desert, 1/2 hour on 1/2 off for 7 hours. The air temp was over 100. The gauge would get to 250. The general consesus there was to let the car run at idle after the track time to let the car "cool down'. The engine temp would drop to 230 or so with the hood open in about 15 minutes. Just my 2 cents but I would suspect somethings not quite right.
