4.2 owners, how is your car in snow?
Want to buy a 4.2, but I dont want to get stuck in snow, are the 4.2's as good in the snow as 2.8 even though they have a high-powered V8? Thanks

As good as my X5 ever was....
without any of the nitpicky break downs. Get a good set of winter tires though. I run Dunlop Winter Sport M3's and I was tearing through over 8" of heavy wet snow in Wisconsin last weekend. I was trying to get it stuck and couldn't.

Pretty good -
Mine would be a LOT better w/ winter (or even all season) tires. But just driving carefully in the snow as if it were an old RWD car makes it extremely stable and managable in the worst conditions - even w/ fat summer ContiSports mounted.

Versus 2.8?
Never driven a 2.8, my guess would be that, stock versus stock, and same model of tire, the 2.8 will be a little better.
However ... I don't switch to winter tires in my 4.2 and it goes like a champ, no problems. Only car better that I've had was my A8, but it had all weather tires. Chicagoland kinds o' winters, for reference.
But a subjective note - I also drive RWD V8 performance cars in the snow, grew up doing that stuff, and I've never used winter tires. Quattro, for me, is simply a convenience to make sure I can get to the office on time.

My 4.2 goes skiing many times each winter. Starting next Saturday...
it'll be the car for my annual two week ski trip to Utah or wherever in the western US it happens to be snowing. With Dunlop Wintersport M2s, it does very well.
