Coming up to warrenty end, now into the big black hole of Audi longevity, if there is such a thing. Anyway would it be wise to change transmission fluid at 50k on my 03 4.2. Dealer cost about $400 which seems reasonable, considering I would have to do it in the road, in the snow. May the Gods be with you and me.

Default I changed mine at 70k with the proper tools & equipment... if you aren't equipped then...

$400 is a good deal!

Or take it to an independent mechanic who repairs VW, and since the Audi is no different than a Passat (at least in terms of progeny), then the independent will do it for one hour of labor (about $70), and you mgiht supply the ATF (make sure it's Pentosin), and you've just saved a bundle (without going to Geico).

There are always alternatives to the "stealer".

Default 2nd that. Find a reliable indy (my local dealers are anything but) and save 2 or 3 hours

labor. I do it myself to make sure it is done right, but I wouldn't do it on the road in the snow. The fluid is actually an Esso spec (LT 71141) but make sure to get the fluid from the dealer so you know you have the right stuff.

www.audipages.com has a good writeup for this procedure for the A8 which applies to all.

Default What do you get for $400? Just the automatic section, or the 3 diffs too?

$400 is OK if the diffs are included.

I do not have the time but have the money. Lots of work done on the cars of all who relied. I have checked out A8 fluid tranny change article which is well presented but frankly to do it right it is a pain in the butt. May your tranny remain strong when others are loosing their fluid. Birthday soon 12/11. Time to hang up the dentures and take a lexative. (65).
