Is it possible to replace the existing grill with the newer one, i.e. from '01?? I am aware of the hood difference and the metal part underneath. Is it possible to replace the lower grill with the newer one with this chrome frame?

Found several messages here re. same topic, but have not found anything regarding upgrade of the lower grill.

Any ideas??

....purchased my '99 2,8 qt Avant the other day and will deliver my '95 A8 2,8 to the new owner today... Look forward to the winter with the A6!!

<'00 grille was surrounded by the hood, i.e., there was a "hole" on the hood into which the grill fit. Later models eliminated the bottom portion of this "hole" with the grill extending all the way to the bottom edge. The grill was no longer surrounded by painted "hood metal," on four sides, only three.

I've always suspected that the thinking behind this change was primarily cost-driven. The hood with a "hole" for the grill had to be significantly more expensive both to manufacure and paint. Indeed, in the new A8s, the grill opening in the hood is further reduced in size with the majority of the area of the lower portion of the primary grill surrounded in cheaper and easier-to-form plastic.

They are shaped differently, just look at them. Not interchangable.
