aFe filters use a flexible and durable polyurethane sealing material, unlike other performance filters' plastisol surround which can shrink and harden under high temperatures. The most common complaint with performance filters is contaminated air leaking around the seals. aFe filters allow airflow only through the filtering media. The firmness of the frame also helps to maintain its shape and keeps the filter from distorting in the air box, further preventing air leaks.
aFe uses deeper pleats with U shapes on the edges to allow better airflow versus competitors narrower bends that result in less airflow. aFe has invested in superior machinery and state of the art manufacturing methods to claim higher airflow than any other manufacturer and they even encourage comparisons. Gauze media is the best material and aFe has improved on the design with their own formulation of oil that is less likely to get on the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and trigger a check engine light (CEL) warning, which, again, is a very common complaint.

Compared with a leading competitor's filter, aFe's deeper pleats allow more airflow. Also note how the bleeding of the polyurethane on the edges of the pleated material is extremely even; not too much, not too little.

The aFe filter's flexible polyurethane housing is rigid, seals completely around the media and is taller, allowing for more filtration surface area.

Compared to stock, the aFe filter has better sealing all around, allows more airflow, stays cleaner longer and has a lifetime warranty.

In comparison to the stock unit, it would appear that there is *significantly* less surface area.
And why are the other comparison shots made with the ribs turned 90° off axis from each other? Odd.
I'm not saying it's not a good filter...just observing...

I don't know I used always put in aftermarket air filters on my cars but after being in this forum I
will no longer use them. I like stock/paper the pleats are tighter and I feel more comfortable that it's doing it's job and that's to filter out the harmful dirt that can damage the engine.
But if you don't care about that and want to squeeze out some extra hp then I guess this would be a cheap fix. I would rather chip it and enjoy the hp that it delivers.
