Anyone? shifter button does not pop out in Park?
Once in a while, when I put the 4.2 from D to P (park) the little chrome button does not pop out. Hence, I can't remove the key. Anyone with similar experience?

don't move it so fast
It's not an excuse, just an explanation.
If you go to park from anything but D or R you can have this problem. I've had it happen coming from the tip slot and also from the 3rd below D.
Just move it slower and you'll be fine. Basically pause for 1/10th of a second in D.
If it does this, bring it back down to D and back up to P again.

Well.. The shift lever is not travelling to the stop because of the ashtray being out.
I did the same thing and brought it in for service. Boy did I feel stupid when they closed the ashtray and it worked fine. :-)

Re: This happen everytime
my best bud drives my car. Never happens to me!
It has something to do with the way he holds the shifter, I've watched him cause it to fail a number of times.
We can switch seats and I can't make it do it.

Did not know that the shift rod is making contact with the ashtray, but I will check. The only thing new (for about a week is valentine1)
Thanks for saving another 4.2 owner from asking the service guy a stupid question!!

Re: Shifter lock out
With my silver 2000 4.2 I have experienced this problem . The dealer had the car for a complete day and recalibrated the shifter ( whatever that means?) The lockup only happens when I go from Tip to park. I've spoken with Audi and they say it is not a commonly reported concern. If we have all dealt with it , I don't use a radar detector, there obviously is a design problem.
