Default Anyone using snow chains on their A6?

I took my family to Lake Tahoe after Christmas in our 7 year old SUV. It was snowing pretty hard in the mountains and we skidded twice, 1 time we spun a whole 270 degrees on our M+S tires shod SUV, in full 4 wheel drive mode. I am wondering if I should get snow chains for the A6 4.2 and take it next time instead. Obviously the A6 does not have the ground clearance, steeper approach and departure angles of a SUV. Would like to hear what others think, and if anyone has actually done it.

Default Not sure about chains, but...

Last winter when NY had a couple of "blizzards" I was able to get around without incident in my A4 w/Dunlop wintersport M2's and I saw 4WD SUVs on the side of the road all over the place. I'm reluctant to use chains on a "nice" car since they can cause severe body/paint damage if they come off or break while you're driving.

Cheers,

Default There isn't room for chains between the upper suspension knuckles and tire.

At best you might try a snug set of cables if you have to do it at all. Even better would be Spider Spikes, which don't go around the backside of the wheel at all.

In the case of applying cables/Spiders, do the fronts if you only have two, so as to retain steering.

Ideally you would have a set of steel wheels and proper snow tires on standby in your garage. All season tires are better known as no season tires - doing nothing well;-)

Default Drive slower?

If you skidded twice perhaps you need to drive more slowly?

Recently got my A6 stuck in Tahoe, WITH tire chains - not enough ground clearance. But I never skidded.

Default Hmmm... driving slowing than a crawl...

...than I did would be a STOP!

We crawled. Not driver issue, vehicle performance issue.

Default Thanks April...

...you are always the best resource around. I plan to get some Dunlop M2 winter sports and steel wheels, and spikes spiders.

It'd be funny if I get all that and we stop going to Tahoe! Still better than buying a new SUV ;-)

4wd actually isn't very good on snow/ice, your more advanced awd audi should fair better.

Default Great hill climb movie demonstrating what you're saying

Voice-over is German, but you still get the point.
(Don't think it's a repost on the A6 board)

4 winter snows with Spike Spiders on the fronts work very well.

What type of SUV? What tire brand? How worn?
