To Audiconvert re: gas
Mr. Bollinger has some very definite opinions and factoids on differences between gas brands. Is the search function working? This comes up every coupla months. Otherwise, you could ask him to regurge the info.
Consumer Reports also deals with this every few years. My recollection from their report is, buy a name-brand gas from a busy station (fresher gas because of turnover). Additive packages differ slightly, just like motor oils, but actual real-world diffs are probably negligible.
There's also an issue about whether it's OK to go down an octane grade to save some $$$$$. My takeaway on that discussion was, try it on your car and see if you notice any loss of power. If not, party on!

Audis like 94 octane, remember Audiablo in Toronto?
I always boost my fuel to 94 octane and the ignition advance goes to full advance and the car is much more responsive. I don't like the idea of running less than 92 and have the engine running retarded ignition. The engine management system senses the fuel by the knock sensors.

Sulphur content?
I know that some highly efficient direct-injection engines, Mitsubishi for one, aren't imported into the US because they can't take the sulphur in American gas. So maybe its indemic to US refining standards and not additives.

if you are talking about gas, then these are brand new
Direct injection diesel has been around for a couple years in Europe (Japan isn't big on diesels) and seems to be great. We can't have it due to sulfur in our diesel fuel.
Direct injection gas engines are brand new, I don't know for sure that any are on the market yet. I do know for sure we won't get them for a while because of our sulful in our gas. The EPA is phasing sulfur down to about 1/2 or 1/4 of Europe's level over the next 5 years or something. So we might get them eventually.

Not that I'm glad they had those problems. But every time I wonder if other manufacturers have to face fiascos like our fuel sender problem I remember what happened to BMW.
They put it behind them and that gives me hope for Audi.
