i have a 6 spd. I assume its my starter - and if so, is there any documentation on how to replace it - I tried searching.

If it will start after a jump, then it's not the starter.

He means pop start it...as in roll down a hill and dump the clutch.

Default Locate the starter under the passenger side of the car and see if the mesh cable is in good shape

if so, you can make a test wire by crimping a spade receptacle to the end of 16ga or so wire. You may want to disconnect the battery now. Pull off the skinny wire going to the starter solenoid (on the starter) slide your test wire on. Make sure the car is in neutral with the parking brake set. connect the battery and touch the test wire to positive terminal of the battery. The car should crank. Now if you have no idea what I am talking about, don't do this as I do not want you to injure yourself or others. Also sparks can ignite battery vapors so theres that too. But this exercise will rule out your ignition switch as a culprit and I did start my wife's avant for a couple of weeks this way when her multfunction (tip) switch went south.

Where is the starter - is it visible under the car?

Default Can't pop start them, damn clutch safety switch...I like that my CQ doesn't have one. :)

A dead battery is a more likely culprit, though...is it the original, by chance?

If it is my battery (dead) - will a "jump start" not work?
