Bose system question
Just wondering if anyone knows what size the subwoofer is in the Bose option in the 2002 2.7t and if anyone has changed it or made any mods to it or the audio system...details please. Thanks

I have. I added a real subwoofer in the trunk. Click on my picture post
in my user name. I have a single 12" in a sealed box instead of the big 2x10. Search the form for a link to an amazing article on a comlplete refit

Typically, Bose uses the similiar size drivers ( ~ 4-6") for the subwoofers as those used in the...
doors, just two of them in a ported enclosure in a push-push configuration. I have not checked the 2002, but "Bose" thinking is that if your pre-equalize the signal, you can get a small driver to produce the output of a larger driver, but with less distortion due to flexure of the speaker cone and less moving mass. This is fairly valid at moderately low frequencies and volumes. If you are looking for a real thumper, this probably won't do.
If you listen at moderate volumes, the ported enclosure is a little "one notey". To help this out, if you restrict the port opening on the subwoofer enclosure with a bunched up cloth, it reduces some of the low end output, but you gain a little clarity... less muddy. Experiment with varying levels of restriction. Depending on the equalization of the program material and your bass settings, the Bose subwoofer is adequate at low to moderate listening levels.
If you think you will upgrade the audio system, its probably best to avoid the Bose so you don't have to fight the pre-equalized signal that is used to feed the Bose drivers.
If you listen to the Bose system in the 2002 and it does what you want it to, stop at that and you're done.

Excellent info - bottom line is
You can add a sub like I did.
You can use the stock head unit and upgade the speakers/amps, but it will require significant custom work.
You can do a compete replacement, but it will require significant custom work.
You can NOT just add an amp, or upgade the speakers.
I am certainly not as technical as Letitsnow. t goal was to add sound at everything from the low end of the mid range down. My set up does that well. To my ears, the current ssytem does a pretty good job of mids and highs.
