Cam tensioner pad replacement
My car has 162000 miles on it. Oil and filter changes every 3000 miles. It has the original cam tensioner pads still on it. When looking at them they look fine but as mentioned in other posts l am new to this. Do l need to have these pads replaced? We are planning a long road trip.

I vote for don’t fix what ain’t broke. Opening a can of worms. Probably several more appropriate cliches. Mine has 200k plus miles and has not experienced many common failures. I take them as they actually occur.
But, you are right, long out of town trips can be scary. I've had my problems when 1000 miles away. But not on problems I expected. Rather ones I did not even consider. If it concerns you rent a car for these trips.

The part I would worry about would be the fuel pump. 160K seems to be the mileage that they begin to fail... (My experience with six A6 C5 cars so far.) Get towing insurance, and don't worry about it.
