Crank Case Vent Hose

Crank Case Vent Hose
Crank case vent hose
1999 A6 2.8Q 97k miles.
I had the machine in to the Dealer getting a couple of recalls done, and the Service person said I may have a leak in the crankcase vent hose. They wanted $300.00 to fix it. But I wanted to do some research first.
What would be some indications that I had a leak in this hose?
Would this possibly be causing misfiring? The check engine light is on.
How difficult a job is it to replace this hose? I have moderate mechanical skill level.
The Dealer called it a crank case vent hose, but I cannot find the part on the internet.
Any help would be greatly appreacited
Thanks
Tom

Here is my $10 fix...unless you want to pay Audi the $300
The breather hose gets very brittle with time. Mine fell apart and I replaced it with 1/2 inch premium heater hose (red hose labeled # 4)). You will need to retain the two end pieces (labeled # 1) were the hose attaches to the crankcase. The 1/2 inch hose will not slip over the barbed end of the end pieces, so you have to use a small piece of 3/4 inch heater hose (labeled # 3)and a 3/4 to 1/2 inch plastic reducer (labeled # 2). The reason you can't use 3/4 inch hose for the entire length (and thus avoid the reducers) is that it is too thick to fit under the plastic cover and in the little slot right in the very front of the engine. All parts can be found at any auto parts store, like Pep boys, and the whole thing should cost around $10 and take 20 minutes to do.

Superb !!
I've been needing to do mine for some time as it's cracked and broken in several placed and
is current taped up with insulation tape.
I'll certaniny be doing this myself - Many thanks for the info
I really can't understand how Audi can charge $300 for a plastic pipe - Would be interesting to find out how much they charge the actual manufacturer.

Re: Crank Case Vent Hose
Shatiras, thanks for the great instructions. I will be doing this when it warms up a bit.
Is it possible that this cuold be casuing #4 cylinder to misfire.
As far as what the dealers charge for parts, I just paid 75.00 for a secondary air pump pipe. $35.00 on the internet. My fault.
Thanks again

Re: Crank Case Vent Hose
I don't think it would, but I do not profess to be an expert either. How do you know you have a missfire on cylinder #4? Did you VAG it? CEL on? By the way, if you are going to change the hose read this post as well:

https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/482689.phtml</a
