open hood....spray with garden hose....wash with sponge....rinse with garden hose
just be able to let the car dry on it's own for about 2 hours. Easy as hell to do.
My 2000 with 62,000 miles is clean as a brand new.
I do the motor every other time i wash the car.
Of course common sense needs to be used.....do not soak any electronic parts for long periods of time....but a quick splash is fine.

Just say no!
Just had my wife's Honda steamed/siliconed and they caused the CEL to go off -- $500, new O2 sensor and "third clutch" relay (i think) later, the light's off and the detail shop is claiming that it's an unheard of problem. My mech says otherwise, but apparently the owner of the shop is a gangster, so...Better to have a little dirt than these problems...
Caveat: it sure does look nice afterwards, however.

spraying simple green does an excellent job as well.
I haven't had any negative affects from spraying it on plastic components. Just wait a couple minutes, scrub anything with a soft plastic brush you want extra clean, and spray with a garden hose.
