Exhaust rattles. Suspect cats. Straight pipe??
As noted, most rattling cats do not require replacement anyway

Reality for many of us is that we are maintaining them to keep them going and sooner or later a repair bill just isnt economically viable, and its trade in time, outside the RS6 no 4.2 is going to be collectable.

My A6 has cat efficiency codes for both banks with one cat having burned out. It still passes emissions based on the tailpipe emissions at idle and at cruising speed.
This year we're switching to readiness codes for emissions testing, hence the spark plug non-foulers will be going on my A6.
I dont know why you tak this so personally, but at some point, any car will lose its value to the point where spending on repairs is approaching the value of the car if not exceeding. Regardless of whether it's a german luxury or a honda.
My observation, for what it's worth. Your comment made me think of it, that's all.

Seriously guys, having cars that pollute is not fun, but think about the global scheme of things. here we're discussing cars that will emit greater pollution than optimally-tuned car, BUT not enough to violate state laws (hopefully).
what about all the modded cars with gutted DPs? guys with offroad pipes?
however, all those tuned cars put together still combine into a negligible amount of pollution in the big scheme of things.
there was an article done by MTO (Ministry of Transportation of Ontario), a PDF doc that i lost, really wish i saved it, where 90% of vehicle pollution comes from transport trucks and other machinery on the roads. not personal vehicles.
then there are diesel trains. and look up the emissions of cargo ships. you'll be truly blown away by what and how much spews out of those ships.
and frankly, we won't solve any pollution issues in the world by address the drip in the faucet but ignoring the fact that the sewage pipe is just open into our back yard.
i am a conscious citizen of the planet, and i don't litter, or pollute, i try to recycle as best i can, but there is much common sense needed.
not every situation requires buying into the mentality of green peace (the organization).

I have a feeling that if you're so hell-bent on your quest to save the environment that you're willing to make enemies out of friends in the process, then you are barking up the wrong tree.
If driving a ridiculously efficient V8 engine without cats is enough of an offense to give rise to your above response, you must be sending mail bombs to all the 2.7T guys driving their cars with misfire codes or running VTA EVAP and CCV systems.
