Default Heater from Hell!

I am kinda stumped on this one. The wifes 2000 A6 with the 2.8 is pissing me off. Heater quit working a couple of weeks ago and the temp was staying down around 160 (it was aroung 20 degrees outside) after about 20-30 minutes of in town driving. Replaced the thermostat, what a world of hurt, and the temp now came up to 185-190. Kinda slow but still heated up. Problem....still no heater. Got home and the intake hose into the heater core is very hot and the exit hose is just barely lukewarm. Must be the heater core. But then I got in the car and started messing with the heater controls. Took it off of Auto and it was still blowing cold air. Jumped the RPMs up to about 2500 and it started blowing warm air. Switched it back to auto and bumped the RPMs back up again and it is just blowing cold air again. Checked the heater exit hose again and it had started to warm up some.

I dont see were there is a coolant control valve going into heater. Even if there is, is it engine or vacume controled? If it is it would seem to have to be on the exit side of heater with my hose temps I am seeing. I am stumped on this. I need some help on this one unless you guys want to see me cry!!

The wife is having to drive with a blanket going to and from work. She not happy! I am afraid pretty soon that cold she is feeling in the car may transfer into the house, you know what I mean, if I dont get it fixed soon!!! That make me not happy! Anybody got any suggestions? Still have a lot of winter left!

Have you bleed the coolant hose to the core? VAG'ed the heater control?

No. I have hot water to the core. Tried pulling the hoses loose but they are stuck big time and dont want to take a chance of tearing up the hose unless it is nesseciary (sp). I dont have any of the VAG tools for the other check you mentioned. Getting ready to head to work now. Hopefully something by the time I get home. Thanks for the reply.

Default Perhaps I misread:

"Got home and the intake hose into the heater core is very hot and the exit hose is just barely lukewarm."

Not sure you have good circulation. Buy a hose hook.

Default Have you checked the CC OBD?

The climate control head has on board diagnostic capability.

Check out the Tech Section under "interior" (I think) and look at the climate control articles for directions.

You have air in the heater core. You need to bleed it better.

Default Cotter pin remover will work too. Helps loosen the hose.
