Try a search, as there are some excellent discussions on this forum...
on the subject.
I installed the GIAC ECU and TIP chips on my 2000 4.2. I cannot locate dyno figures on the GIAC ECU chipped engine, but the throttle response seems better to me than stock. Biggest performance gains are in suspension from Eibach sport springs, Bilstein sport shocks and H-Sport anti-sway bar. The H-sport mod is perhaps the best single change. I have kept the 17X8" wheels and 255/40 tires, as I do not want to deal with bent wheels that I would have from 18" wheels. 18" wheels would probably produce better cornering, but a firmer ride.

Shoulda got a 2.7T. 4.2 is a great car (better than 2.7T stock), but there aren't many...
... options to boost power. You can open up the exhaust, and get a chip to quicken how the transmission works.
Enjoy what you've got.
2.7T can be cheaply modified to 350HP.
