Might be time to go up a rim size, so should one go with a 18x8 or 18x8.5 rim size with HP2 calipers

that all depends on what's available for the rim you like and more importantly..
the offset, i recently installed 18 x 8 rs6 5 spokes - which had the wrong offset (45) to clear the hp2's, i subsequently had to get 15 mm spacers. the wheels come right out to the edge and give the car a nice stance. i haven't had any issues with the spacers so far.

It is not so much the rim width that is the issue...
...it has to do with the offset, and how the rim is constructed on the backside of the face. Example...is it curved out to allow for larger calipers, or is it machined flat. The extra 1/2" won't make a difference if you don't pay equal attention to these two items.

22's!
just kidding, I'd look at both seriously myself, and look at the tire options (replacement pricing, and tread wear are bog ones on me) and see if I could get 8.5 that will work without spacers. on a narrowbody, I'd stick with 18x8's, as the 8.5's might have to stuck out a bit far to prevent rubbing, but if you like/don't mind having wheels that stick out farther than the stockers, go for it. (not to mention I have 8's on my widebody and feel no real need for anything wider for street wheels)
oh, and don't forget, the bigger and wider the wheel, the more weight, so you'll lose acceleration and brakes will wear quicker. also changing the track on a car can have adverse affects on the suspension.
