new 2002 a6
anyone have inf0 on new A6-2002 cars. I was told the 4.2 will be eliminated and there will be 2 types of A6's. A 3.0 and a new turbo version. I was told the 4.2 wasn't a good seller in US.

Say it ain't so
I don't know if it is true that the 4.2 will be discontinued in the U.S., but I do know they sell as many as they ship and are usually sold by the time they hit the port. I guess I'm glad I got mine when I did. If they bring the S6 saloon (sedan) it won't hurt too much, except for the price. The 3.0 should be a nice improvement over the 2.8 however.

haven't heard about A6 4.2 demise
but IMHO it never did make sense.
It beat the #$#$% out of the A8 for 20K less.
Duh.
And it looked better inside....I like the concept of the aluminum space frame and the extra space in the A8, but if I wanted a Buick the A8 sure looks like one on the inside compared to our A6 4.2Q.
Now if the A8 had the S8 engine....naah, still not worth $20K more. I'd rather have the S500 Mercedes.
As for them being sold quickly...maybe now, but they were a drag on the market in the DC/MD area in January 2000...whatever color one wanted they were available on the lot. Looking back on it, the ones on the lot didn't have PSK or the sport suspension/chromed 5spoke wheels, but what the hey.
On second thought, I'd vote for the S6 taking up the slack. Anyone who wants a 4.2 gets an S6.

My local dealer has had two 2000 4.2s
on the lot for at least the last 4 months and doesn't seem able to get rid of them. IMO the price differential over the 2.7T is not justified.

Minus sport package is the key
The only one's I have ever seen sitting on the lot have been 2000s without the sport package, with or without 17" pie plates, and usually with off-colors. I have seen many more 2.7Ts and even many, many more 2.8s, both 2000 and 2001s sitting for extended periods of time during my repeated visits to numerous lots both in NoCal and southern Texas. I realize this is mainly due to many more 2.7Ts and 2.8s being imported, but I very much doubt the 4.2 (with sport package) has ever (1 1/2 years) been a drag on sales. Obviously, my two areas of the country that I have frequented do not represent the entire U.S. and things could be different elsewhere, but I agree with Stu B that due to the presence of the others (BMW/Merc) I doubt Audi will be removing its V8 unless it is planning to price the S6 closer (low 60s) to the 540i and E430sport. Only Audi knows.
