New A6 3.0 CVT Owner
Pleased to join the forum. On reading through the threads, found much useful information provided by members. Very happy with my first Audi car and really impressed with interior layout, materials, function as well as smooth driver and handling. I was going for 6speed at first bu upon driving CVT for a couple of hours in various conditions I was sold. Also trunk is big enough to throw my hockey gear and sticks in. Wish to upgrade tires to 17" or 18" except 18" in 235/40/R18 scare me because of the low profile. I would appreciate any feedback on 18" low profile tires ride comfort on hwy. I have much experience with turbo modifications - did HKS Stage III on my Probe GT - still running strong after 13 years - secret is frequent oil changes (3k miles)and turbo timer.

Welcome. I've been running 18" wheels for over a year with zero problems.

Of course I'm in southern California where the roads are better than average. My dealer says he cant keep anything with a CVT on the lot.

I think the concensus for price/performence/ride/longevity is 17" in 7,5 width with
235/45-17 tires. go to tirerack.com or give them a call and start shopping!

http://www.tirerack.com</a

Drove a 2002 4.2 Sport with 18", and rode smoother than my 2001 w/ 17"ers....
The suspension improvements in the 2002 seem substantial. Based on that, I would put 18s in a 2002, but keep 17s on a 2001. I'm not all that fond of large wheels because of the weight, low profile, and chance of bending a rim on potholes, but I'd be more than comfortable with these choices.

Thanks for the advice on the wheels. Damn, after reading more threads, I should have bought the 2.7T - would have been much more fun to modify. Oh well, maybe some wheels and tires and a little lowering.

The 18" wheels are attractive, moving two sizes up but 40 series in sidewall profile could be a harsh ride? I plan on doing much highway cruising between Sacramento and the Bay Area and the 55 series are great right now in terms of comfort. But, I am willing to sacrifice a bit in the ride for the look of larger wheels. Thanks for your advice.
