New owner of A6, engine ticking noise, need help.
Hi, I am a new audi owner. The car is making this ticking noise. here is the link to the video.

I am hearing a bunch of ideas what could be wrong with it; the lifter rod might be bent, the timing could be off, the timing tensioner needs to be replace. Some have suggested that its a normal audi/VW noise and shouldn't srtess about it. The frequency of the noise does get higher when given more gas but does not get louder.
So any help would be appreciated...
Thanks

that sounds like just 1 lobe, possibly a bad cam, I would pull the Valve cover and inspect. the 3.0 does not have a chain tensioner like the 2.8 does. if all the cam lobes look good then I would run some seafoam thru it, drive for 100-200 miles then change the oil with a good oil and filter.

I will start with this disclaimer...these guys know way more about these cars than I do. However I have a 02 2.7 and I had this same noise...ticking and it would tick faster when on the gas...for me it was a bad spark plug. When I changed them I noticed that the bottom end that has the little hook type piece? Well that had completely come off. As soon as I replaced all of them the noise went away. No problems since. Not sure what happen to that piece that broke off though....

Since it is the 3.0l then my first guess would be a cam lobe as others have said. Pull the valve covers and see. Any other Audi engine would get a different diagnoses, but 3.0's love to eat cams.

It sounds just like my 3.0 before I change the exhaust camshaft and all the six followers for the passenger side. Just open it up and use a 24mm 12 point socket to turn the engine and look at your cam lobes. Good luck.

Good luck over there.

Could be carbon, timing, or a number of issues, but without a VCDS and you posting more details...doubt we'll be able to assist. Also, as JC said, you're in the wrong subforum...you need to post and SEARCH in the C6 section.
