Default No Start issue

Hey guys I'm hoping someone here can offer me more information on my no start problem, I have a 2001 Audi A6 2.7t, I just bought it a month ago it ran very well, the the fluids were maintained, 220,000 on it. It took a good 5-10 seconds to start, sometimes it started right up but more often than not it took a while. The other day I turned it off to save gas while I was waiting for my gf and when I went to start it again it just made one clunk noise, no clicking, no turn over. Got a look at the belt, it moves maybe an inch and goes back in place. My first though was the engine seized or I need a starter, today I removed the front end and was able to crank it by hand with a socket. What would anyone of you suspect if it were you? Thanks for any advice in advance

Agree codes are first place to start. If you do not have a Ross VAG-COM then get one if you intend to keep this Audi. If you barrow one, then copy or photo codes and begin by researching those codes via search on this forum, and on Google.

My guess from your limited info is that it is electrical rather than mechanical. Ignition switch, battery, starter circuit? Could have more than one issue, maybe fuel system is not staying charged, thus the long crank. But figure out the no power to starter first.

I'm going to run the codes today and I'll post them but I took the serpentine belt off and checked the pulleys and the alternator is frozen, won't budge at all, I have another Audi A6 same year make model engine, I use for parts. I'm thinking that's it but regardless I'll post be codes shortly, any other information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again guys

At risk of stating the obvious, swap out the alternator first. The extended cranking is very likely a fuel pump issue. Sounds like the check valve is allowing pressure to bleed off when the pump isn't running. If the battery is low because the alternator has been failing the serpentine belt on a frozen alternator could be enough resistance to prevent cranking. That's why I'm suggesting you change it out first, plus the fact you already have the car in service position.

Hey guys so it turned out to be the alternator, switched it out and it runs again, however the power steering pump is making noise when I turn now, I whine or groan only when I'm turning, I'm thinking there could be air in the lines or the power steering pump is going, when the car didn't start the belt did seem to put downward force on the pulley could have something to do with it. I'm going to bleed it and add new fluid. But what do you guys think? When I first put it back together it did leak some from the hose on the driver side going to the Cooler, I refixed the clamp so the leak stopped but I want to get others opinions as I'm doing this

The procedure to bleed the power steering system is to turn lock to lock both ways several times while the engine is running. Make sure the reservoir has adequate fluid, and look for foaming in the reservoir. Foam indicates that the pump is sucking air, either through a seal or a crack in the supply hose. Your pump may be bad... I think that I have replaced a total of five power steering puimps over my years of C5 ownership (since 2002).

What george said. Definitely air in the system. Make sure when you add fluid you use the right stuff. The Pentosin fluid is the correct stuff. O'reilly's carries it or you can order on line from after market.
