Is this normal?
Last night I took my new 4.2 out for a trip on the freeway. I was in tip mode cruising in 4th gear at 70 mph.. the tach showed approx 2800 rpm. I decided to pass someone and when I nudged the gas pedal a little the rpm's went up to about 3300 but the tranny sounded like it was slipping..after a second or so the rpm's came back down and the trans 'caught' and I began to speed up as desired. Every time I did this the same result. There seems to be alot of slippage in all gears with this tiptronic.. way more than I expect from a $52,000 german car. Is this how they all work or do you think theres something amiss?

Not normal at all. Highway passing is the greatest strength of this drivetrain; the ...
"drive by wire" throttle does have a slight lag to it, but not like what you describe, particularly in that circumstance.

I've only put the tranny in Tip when I need to pass some cars...
So I get into Tip and drop down to 4th, then 3rd for the maximum torque. Yeah, it eats up alot of gas, but...when you need to pass, you need to pass.
I will try out what you did sometime today and report back what I got from my tranny.
I just washed & detailed the inside of the car. A lil' too lazy to wax the car this time, but I will next time around.
Sounds like you got a good price on your car too, congrats!

Take it to the dealer and take the service rep for
a test drive. Then (if you have to), drive another 4.2 on the lot. This is not normal at all. My 01'4.2 when using Tiptronic is nice and very tight when I pass on the highway, or at any other time when in Tip mode. In non-tip mode the tranny is still fairly tight. The good news is at least you can reproduce the problem for the shop.

FYI: I had to drive 160 miles round trip today for Easter
celebration with our family. I did the speed, gear and RPM's that you mentioned and I could not duplicate your problem at all. My TIP shifting was nice and tight. Even when I tried various speeds and RPM's w/different gears it was tight every time. I have 18K miles on the clock. Good Luck and let us know what the dealer says.
